  • OC Robotics wins contract with US military

OC Robotics has won a contract with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, part of the US Department of Defense, to develop their smallest ever snake-arm robots.

In response to a Sources Sought Announcement, UK-based company OC Robotics has been awarded a sole source contract for remote controlled snake-arm robots. The arm is to be only 1/4 inch (6mm) in diameter and the system will be small enough and light enough to be carried by one person.

Despite a worldwide search, no other company was found to have the technical expertise needed to create a robotic arm of this size and capability.

While previous contracts have pushed the envelope of OC Robotics' technology towards bigger and stronger arms, this contract requires OC Robotics to reduce the size and weight of the design to create the smallest snake-arm robot yet.

This contract also paves the way for other small arm applications such as medical robotics and industrial inspection.
